Christchurch Methodist Mission finalist in Westpac Champion Business Awards

We’re pleased to announce that the Christchurch Methodist Mission been named a finalist in the Westpac Champion Business Awards in the Community Impact - Medium/Large Enterprise category. It comes as recognition of our work housing the city’s most vulnerable, particularly our efforts leading the collaborative Housing First initiative in Christchurch.

We see the effects of inadequate and unaffordable housing every day. Nearly 900 Canterbury householdsare on the Government’s social housing register, meaning the housing and social support provided by the Christchurch Methodist Mission is needed more than ever before. We’re one of Canterbury’s largest community housing providers.

At any one time, the Christchurch Methodist Mission supports over 150 households with housing - from families at risk of homelessness to older people unable to afford market rent. As the lead agency for Housing First Christchurch we’re pleased to announce that over 80 percent of people receiving its services in the first year retained their housing and did not return to homelessness. To date, 65 people have been housed by Housing First Christchurch.

By the middle of next year, Housing First Christchurch hopes to have 100 long-term homeless people in warm, affordable and secure housing. The goal of the initiative is that homelessness in Christchurch will be rare, brief and non-recurring.
